The genital herpes is an infection, caused by a virus, which is transmitted during a sexual activity. It causes group of small ulcers on and around the genitals in both men and women. This disease caused by the virus HSV (herpes simplex virus). There are two kinds of it – HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is called “fever blisters”. In women the rash can be outside the vagina, but they commonly are inside. There they can cause discomfort or discharge but cannot be seen except during a doctor’s examination. They can be found all around the genitals, even on and in the anus.
The symptoms can last two to four weeks during the first outbreak. It is the most painful and longer part of the treatment. You can have headaches, fever, muscle aches or painful urination. After the first part of the cure the infection can return, but with less symptoms.
Even before any blisters or ulcers can be seen there is pain and discomfort. This is because inflammation of the nerves leading to the infected skin. If the individual has signs of an infection he or she might see a doctor as soon as possible. The medication is more effective if it is started in the first days when it has appeared.
People with genital herpes infection are highly contagious. Everybody with infection must avoid any sexual contacts for preventing their partners of infection. Even the condom does not prevent the spread of the virus. This is because not the whole infected are is covered with the condom.
If the sores are present the chance to infect someone else is extremely big. Those who have received a treatment can be contagious, too. Even the skin looks normal and there are no symptoms, the virus can be forwarded. Because of this the safe sex practice is required to minimize the chance of spreading the disease.
